IN MEMORY

http://www.roea.org/9805/ho00005.html

Sterie Mihadas was born December 15, 1913, in Turia, county Cozani, Macedonia, Greece to Athanasius Mihadas. He attended Elementary School for the first five grades in the Romanian School in Turia and then five grades at the Romanian School in Grebena, Macedonia, Greece. In 1934, he was called to serve in the Greek Army. His desire to serve as a priest took him to follow courses at the Seminary "Veniamin Costache" in Iasi, Romania, from which, in 1939, he received his diploma.

THE LITTLE VLACH CORNER

http://bastian.freeyellow.com/index.html

The  Vlachs  (or, as they call themselves,  Aromanians, Macedo-romanians or Tzantzarii ) are romance-speaking people scattered all over the Balkan peninsula. Not too many people heard about them, partly because many Vlachs live as wandering shepherds in remote and mountainous areas, partly beacause of their readiness to merge with other nationalities (the Vlachs are often difficult to distinguish from the medieval Bulgarians or, in modern times, from Greeks or from Serbs). However many of them managed to preserve rather well their language and a sense of cultural identity in spite of receiving so little support, both at home and abroad, as a minority group. According to the Greek Helsinki Monitor, the Aromanian language has no legal status in Greece and is not taught at any level of the educational system (except the study of the language in a course on neo-Latin languages at the University of Salonica). The Council of Europe addressed occasionally the problem of the Aromanian minority.

THE PREFECTURE OF SERRES TODAY

http://serres.compulink.gr/serres/3E.HTM

The main characteristic in the natural environment of the Prefecture of Serres is the fertile plain, which is surrounded by a forestry mountain chain. Sixty eight torrents flow into this green plain enriching it with brought substances. As a result of that this area, as seen from the agricultural point of view, belongs to the particularly agricultural parts of Greece and its contribution to the agricultural income of the country is rather important.

LIVADI

http://www.livadi.org/

The location, the architecture, the clothing and even the language of the village are distinctive. Since many Livadians lived in exile in Romania during the occupation of the Ottomans, the population is a mixture of cultures. Although everyone in the village speaks standard Greek, many also speak a dialect called Vlaxika. Vlaxika is very close to modern Romanian and serves as link to the history of the village.

ANDREI SAGUNA

http://www.ohiou.edu/~Chastain/rz/saguna.htm

Andrei Saguna (1809-1873) Bishop and Metropolitan of the Romanian Orthodox Church in Transylvania and political leader of the Romanians of Transylvania. He was born in Hungary of Macedo-Romanian parents and as a gymnasium and university student lived in Pest at the home of his uncle, a prominent member of the Macedo-Romanian merchant community. Saguna's decision to enter the priesthood was a response to his strong religious convictions. He studied for the priesthood at the Theological Institute in Vrsac, in the Banat, where the Serbian Metropolitanate of Karlovitz, the administrative center of the Orthodox Church in the Habsburg Monarchy, had established a Romanian section.
