KEVREN CORNISH LANGUAGE PAGE

http://www.ozemail.com.au/~kevrenor/kevren.htm

The Cornish language is a Celtic language, of the brythonic (or 'P' Celtic) strand akin to Welsh and sister of the Breton language. When the Saxon invaders in the 5th - 8th C. AD divided the Britons into what was to become Welsh, Cornish, Cumbrian, and (indirectly) Breton a 1500 year saga for the Cornish language began! This was the times of King Arthur and Trystan & Yselt, and also the times of the great migrations with Irish and Welsh Saints travelling across Cornwall to Brittanny. The settlers in Brittany came from Dumnonia and South Wales and took their language with them!

GERLYVER KERNEWEK - SAWSNEK

http://www.pauldavies.net/cornish/lexicon.cfm

This lexicon currently lists 4,477 English words with their Cornish equivalents, including gender and, for some words, plural. It is only a word list, and not a dictionary, as no definitions or parts of speech are noted. The lexicon is stored as an ODBC Jet database served by ColdFusion. Users should not rely on its scholarship: instead, we invite those more knowledgable to make revisions, additions, and critical comment below.

I SUPPORT THE CAMPAIGN FOR A CORNISH ASSEMBLY

http://www.cornwall.eu.org/assembly/

Cornwall is a nation with its own identity, culture, traditions and history - it also suffers severe and unique economic problems. Important decisions about our future are increasingly taken outside of Cornwall and such decisions are often inappropriate or even contrary the needs of our local communities. Scotland now has its own Parliament and Wales its own Assembly – but Cornwall has been ignored. We have had the artificial 'south-west' region foisted upon us. Cornwall has had to accept second best for too long. We, the People of Cornwall, must have a greater say in how we are governed. We need a Cornish Assembly that can set the right democratic priorities for Cornwall and provide a stronger voice for our communities in Britain, in Europe and throughout the wider World.

TABM KERNUACK: A BIT OF MODERN CORNISH

http://www.ex.ac.uk/~ajbeer/aust.htm

Modern Cornish is that form of the Cornish language which was last spoken traditionally in West Cornwall during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It lingered into the nineteenth century and at the time of the major Cornish exodus to Australia some people from the far west had a considerable traditional knowledge of the language. Much of their professional mining vocabulary was in Cornish and some of these words have come to be internationally used. In 1911 one Cornish emigrant, Henry Thomas, wrote down a few phrases of Modern Cornish in his notebook showing that interest in the language is not a new phenomenon amongst Cornish Australians.

BARDS OF THE GORSEDD OF CORNWALL IN AUSTRALIA

http://members.ozemail.com.au/~kevrenor/gorseth.html

THE GORSETH OF CORNWALL In ancient Celtic times the Bards were the chief holders of the history and genealogies of the nations, reciting tales which glorified or ridiculed the recognised leaders amongst their ruling elites! There were three (3) gathering places for the Bards in Britain; one thought to be Boscawen Un in Cornwall! Bardic traditions died out in Cornwall in the 11th C. but in 1928 the Cornish Gosedd (Gorseth in the Cornish language) was re-established by Henry Jenner (who was also the father of the language revival). Since that first gathering at Boscawen Un, near St Buryan, 1000 Cornish people have been so honoured. The leader is called the Grand Bard, and all bards wear blue robes with a headress. The arwon (3 rays of the sun) on the headress (and shown above) is the Gorseth symbol! The Gorseth exists to maintain the national Celtic spirit of Cornwall and to give expression to such spirit; to encouragethe study of Cornish History and the Cornish Language; to foster Cornish literature, art and music; to link Cornwall with the other Celtic countries. It promotes a spirit of peace and cooperation amongst those who work for the honour of Cornwall. The Open Gorseth of all Bards worldwide is held on the first Saturday in September each year at a different site within Cornwall.

TYR - GWYR - GWERYN

http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/kernow_tgg/TGGhome.html

This site is an attempt to communicate certain matters regarding the political situation of the Cornish people and which is intended to evoke a public, and academic, debate into all the facts and to explore the significance of what is being said within this site.   The Cornish Genocide suite of pages sets out the hypothesis that the Cornish people are being subjected to policies of genocide and this site will identify the mechanisms by which this process is being perpetrated. Some of the comments may seem to be rather outspoken and radical but there are many of us who feel deeply insulted many times a day and feel the need to retaliate. Such insults are dealt out by the wilful, and ignorant, misrepresentation of Cornwall. There is also as a consequence, the dismissive way that Cornwall and the Cornish people are treated by both opinion-creators, decision-makers and 'innocent' communicators who, in the absence of the truth, inadvertently give credibility to what is political propaganda rather than what is politically correct.

ASTEVERYN

http://www.asteveryn.kernow.eu.org/

'Asteveryn' is a Cornish Dance Demonstration Team and Troyl (Ceili) Band. 'ASTEVERYN' simply means 'let us replenish, refill, pour back etc' within the context of replacing that which, for whatever reason, is missing. It is a recognition that Cornish culture, generally, has been stifled and supplanted by a non-Cornish overlay which even now intrudes into what we are doing and which only too easily becomes the 'soft option'. Culture is, and should be, fun and there is enough of it world-wide to satisfy any appetite. True culture, however, comes from how we,the people, express our historic Cornish identity within its modern context. This is inextricably linked to our territory - Cornwall!
