A WELSH COURSE

http://www.cs.brown.edu/fun/welsh/Welsh.html

This course is one suitable for beginners. The main emphasis of the course is in developing conversational skills in Welsh as it is currently spoken (as contrasted with teaching the forms needed for understanding literary Welsh). The material is an indirect descendent of the Cymraeg Byw movement of the 1960s and 1970s. This course does not assume a general proficiency in learning languages, nor any previous background in Welsh. The course is also developed in such a way that it can be distributed either through an ASCII medium wrapped as a setext, or made available in HTML on the WWW.

HISTORY AND STATUS OF THE WELSH LANGUAGE

http://users.comlab.ox.ac.uk/geraint.jones/about.welsh/

This document is written to accompany Mark Nodine's ondine Welsh lessons and used to be an appendix of that document, although I think it has now been removed from there (which makes the huge numbers of accesses to it the more confusing). It aims to answer, from the - perhaps necessarily opinionated - standpoint of a native Welsh speaker, some questions about the historical, political and cultural background of the language that he or I think might be asked by a learner from outside that culture.

A very warm welcome to the website of the University of Wales Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies. Established in 1985, the Centre is part of the central services of the federal University. Our aim is to carry out substantial research projects into the language, literature and history of Wales and the other Celtic countries. We have a splendid site alongside the National Library of Wales where we enjoy panoramic views of the town of Aberystwyth, the campus of the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, and the beautiful coastline of Cardigan Bay. This is an international centre of excellence, rewarded in the Research Assessment Exercise of 1996 with the grade of 5. The following pages introduce you to our exciting research projects and our stimulating programmes. I hope you enjoy reading about our work and that you'll keep in touch with our website regularly.

RhAG (Parents for Welsh Medium Education) is an association which represents parents throughout Wales. Our group includes both Welsh speakers and non-Welsh speakers; some of us live in towns, others in the country; some of us were born and brought up in Wales, others have moved here to live. But what unites us all is the conviction that bilingualism is one of the greatest gifts one can give a child, and that the ability to speak Welsh will help children develop confidence in themselves and in their culture. Our function is to promote the advantages of Welsh medium education and campaign for better facilities for the ever growing number of children being taught through the medium of Welsh. We hope you will find the answers to your questions about Welsh medium education on this website, but if you don't, please send us an e-mail or give us a call and we'll try to help you.

GWYBOIADRU

http://members.tripod.com/gwybodiadur/

This site is a directory of information to do with the Welsh language. It lists and reviews books, tapes, CD-ROMs, courses and online resources for Welsh learners and teachers, focusing particularly on Welsh dictionaries. The aim is to put you in touch with the materials you need to help you study (or teach) this wonderful language as pleasantly and effectively as possible. You won’t find much here about Welsh literature, music, history, politics, genealogy, tourism, mythology, recipes, Celtic jewellery or whatever, although some of the links will still be useful to you. The site is updated and expanded regularly so please call again – or, to be notified automatically when it changes, post your e-mail address in the red box below.

TEGRYN VILLAGE

http://www.tegryn.co.uk/non_flash_index.htm

Tegryn is a small village, high in the Preseli hills in Pembrokeshire West Wales. The village is built on the upper slopes of Frenni Fawr {the 3rd highest peak in the range , as a result of which we have magnificent views in all directions. On the down-side however, there is nothing to protect us from the gales blowing inland from the Irish sea {when I first moved here I was shocked to see rain, snow, and hail falling sideways - but now it seems quite normal !. Tegryn is also notorious for mist. Having said all that, I have to say that on a clear and bright summer day our village and its surrounding area is one of the most beautiful places that I have ever seen. See for yourself on our picture page.

YMGYRCHU

This site presents social and political campaigning in Wales during the twentieth century through the use of digitised images of original documents, photographs and sound and video files. The campaigns voice the rights of various groups, for example the right of women to vote, or the right of miners and quarrymen to fair wages and decent working conditions.

WELSH LANGUAGE PAGES

http://www.castlewales.com/cym_list.html

The Castles of Wales has always recognized the importance of supporting efforts aimed at preserving the ancient Celtic language of Wales. Although considerable efforts were made in the past to suppress the learning of Welsh, it nevertheless survives as a true living language, and today there are many communities throughout Wales where Welsh is still the language of everyday life for a majority of the people. We are therefore pleased to be able to present several pages at the Castles of Wales web site in Welsh (listed below). Additional translations are planned for the future. For those interested in learning more about the Welsh language, we have also provided links to certain Welsh language learning resources on the net, as well as other web sites that have pages available in Welsh. GWARNANT

http://www.webexcel.ndirect.co.uk/gwarnant/

The best resource on the web for medieval Welsh poetry. Gwarnant has the texts of poems by the famous (and the obscure) from the earliest surviving works up to the fifteenth century. Mostly in the original Welsh with notes on the manuscript sources, but with many translations as well. Gwarnant has already won a Culture Choice Award at its old website and has been redesigned for its new home. Besides the poetry, there are sections on Welsh history and Arthur.

WELSH AUTHORS

http://jade.ccccd.edu/grooms/ydcm.htm

This work should aid experienced learners fill the gaps between speaking, writing and reading the Welsh language. These exercises help you master various aspects of the literary language with an emphasis on the syntax and mutations. It is also an introduction to the great wealth of modern Welsh literature. Our hope here on the prairie (and the Web) is to widen the knowledge of the unique craft of some Welsh writers to the benefit of learners here in Texas as well the diaspora of Welsh across the world. This course was designed and tested in Plano, Texas by students in the Welsh program and the chapter of CYD at Collin County Community College.
