AEGEAN MACEDONIAN COUNCIL OF MELBOURNE AND VICTORIA

http://www.arts.unimelb.edu.au/amu/ucr/student/1996/v.stefanov/aegean/aegmc1.htm

The Aegean Macedonian Council was established last year to counter Greek government claims that Greece is homogenous in its ethnic make up and that there exists no Macedonians within the current Greek borders. The Council recognises that the common experience for all Macedonians has been one of division and oppression for a substantial part of this century.

his organisation was formed in June 1994, by a group of people who wished to hold functions and promote the Macedonian traditions and culture as practised by their forefathers in stari kraj (the old country). The first official function was held in September of that year at Neret Receptions, Epping, Victoria and since then the number of members and supporters has continuously grown. The members of the Macedonian United Villages Lerin Inc. were previously part of the United Villages Family Association, an organisation representing eight village clubs from the Lerin district of Aegean Macedonia, namely Kabasnitsa, Kladorabi, Bitusha, Dolna Kleschina, Opsirina, Negochani, Sveta Petka and Klubuchishta. This organisation was formed in 1978 and held functions such as picnics and dances with music in both and Macedonian and Greek being played.

REPUBLIC OF TURKEY – MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS

http://www.mfa.gov.tr/grupa/ac/ach/macedon2.htm

Ethnic Macedonians in Greece are an integral part of the Macedonian nation. Following the partition of Macedonia in 1913, the Aegean Macedonia was annexed by Greece and since then its indigenous people, the ethnic Macedonians, became the target and often the victim of the oppressive policies of Greek state. Today, after nearly ninety years of assimilation efforts by the Greek governments it seems that measures have proved to be unsuccessful in Hellenizing the region. Currently, the ethnic Macedonians, estimated around 1,000,000 by some sources, still constitute the majority of population in that part of the Greece, the Aegean Macedonia.
