Thursday March 4 2000 saw our Web site coming on line to provide regularly updated information about the 9th Games being held in the Isle of Man from July 7th to July 13th 2001. The site is being sponsored by local IT company Datacentre and will be managed by Sean Kelly (Left September 2000) and the Results Co-ordinator for the 2001 Games, John Christal. Sean and John have put the basic framework for the site in place and aim to have a steady development of its content with plenty of essential information and background items of interest.

Manx Gaelic is one of the three Q-Celtic, or Goidelic Celtic languages. Manx is in a similar position to Cornish in that, in the strict sense, there are no native speakers left. The last native speaker of Manx Gaelic, Ned Maddrell, died in 1974. In 1866 it was recorded that 50% of the islanders spoke Manx, so the decline in the language was exceedingly swift, within the space of just a couple of generations. Despite this, the Isle of Man is undergoing a great revival of its native Gaelic language and culture at the present time.

Manx Gaelic, or Gael Vanninagh as those who speak it call it, is a member of the Celtic group of the Indo-European family of languages. This huge family the native homelands of which cover most of Europe, half of Asia and, as a result of colonisation, the Americas, Australasia and parts of Africa, includes such major tongues as Russian, Hindi, German, Spanish, French and of course English, while the Celtic group, once spread throughout Europe, has for many centuries been confined to the British Isles and north-western France.

The Isle of Man, situated in the centre of the British Isles, is an internally self-governing dependent territory of the Crown which is not part of the United Kingdom. Tynwald, the Island’s 1,000 year old Parliament, makes its own laws and oversees all internal administration, fiscal and social policies. External issues, such as foreign representation and defence, are administered on the Island’s behalf by the U.K. Government and the Island makes an annual payment for these services. As a British Crown dependency, the ultimate responsibility for the Island’s good government is vested in the Crown but by long standing convention, the U.K. Government does not legislate for the Island except with the specific consent of the Island’s Government.

MANX CELTIC YOUTH FESTIVAL

This Manx singing group has been in existence since 1989. It originated as a handful of friends who wished to support the Gaelic group singing competitions in Yn Cruinnaght festival. Discovering that they sang well together, the group began to meet regularly and developed a distinctive style. There are now eight women and six men in the group. Some are musicians in their own right, and many are involved in Manx language and cultural movements. All enjoy singing for fun, and the social aspects remain important.
